EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
