Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
