Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all modern cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This wider defence environment highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including transport use to communication habits.
