Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
