A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
