Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
