Trump's Regime of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's insatiable appetite for revenge has quickly morphed into a methodical apparatus. Over the twelve months, the president's rage and whims have assumed the form of official policies similar to comparable to past repressive systems. Government personnel who resist his demands are summarily dismissed and succeeded by supporters. Opposing figures who confront him face indictment, trial and penalties. Adversaries have been designated under administration directives as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “anti-capitalist”, and warned with criminal charges as “terrorists”.

The Justice System Transformed

Every situation involving legal action of Trump's enemies and immunity for supporters exhibits its own particular features. But, despite their particular form, they embody manifestations of what has arisen as a systematic technique. These incidents are not isolated. Trump's cleansing of federal prosecutors and law enforcement officials, alongside his placement of devotees in senior posts, commenced rapidly, promptly took on a consistency, and has now been shaped into a structure. DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been remade into partisan agencies under the president's explicit orders to execute his wishes. Wrongdoing has been made normal. It represents the retribution system.

Administration is more concerned with punishing the President's supposed enemies than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Within the Apparatus

The origin of this mechanism has been exposed in the court filing of three previous high-ranking FBI officials filed in late summer in the federal court in DC against agency head an administration figure and attorney general another official for unlawful firing in “a initiative of revenge against them for what Defendants deemed to be a inability to demonstrate sufficient allegiance”. The document states that one official, the previous acting FBI director, describes a exchange in which the director “openly confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

The official had sought to protect FBI agents from being terminated, the lawsuit alleges. He told him that “administration officials” – interpreted by the official to be the executive branch and DoJ – had directed him to remove anyone who they identified as having worked on a criminal investigation against him. The complaint continues: “He stated that he had to terminate the individuals his bosses told him to remove, because his ability to retain his own job relied on the ouster of the officials who worked on matters involving the President. He commented that there was no way he or him could do to halt these or any other terminations, because ‘the FBI attempted to incarcerate the chief in detention and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When he informed him he was breaking the bureau's own policies, the director supposedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the character of the immediate dismissals were likely improper”.

Widespread Impact

Since the director's claimed confession to the official, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and repurposed for the administration's retribution system. Multiple of the agency's senior executives were fired or compelled to leave in the first days of the administration. Roughly thousands of professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. At least multiple DoJ lawyers, including those in the New York office, resigned in dissent over what they viewed as partisan influence in withdrawing the legal action against the local official, a political figure, in exchange for his cooperation with his federal agency arrests of immigrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which handles ethical violations, has been reduced to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been devastated: 70% of its employees has departed. One-third of senior leaders at DoJ have quit. The unit implementing environmental law has experienced the exit of half its management.

Incentives and Penalties

Concerning the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, the official, resigned in dissent against what she characterized as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, his “immigration leader,” appeared as the enforcer with him on television to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll be back in the city.”. And, a former official, formerly the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who brokered the deal, was given an court role, a likely springboard to the highest court.

The president's immunity for crimes committed while in government, granted by the unprecedented judgment of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus thwarting his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his political viability for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he stands to defend his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been liberated to enable corruption. The impact of the court judgment saturates his presidency and the political party thoroughly. Trump v United States has escalated. In the words of Richard Nixon's White House counsel he said about the Watergate
